After a little more digging, the NODEZ team looks to be the real deal. Many of the problems WW failed to avoid (repeatedly) have already been solved by the NODEZ team.
To me, the big indicator is their production of functional enclosure prototypes (I assume they were precision printed by someone like Shapeways). Assuming the final packaging design stays the same, the molds should be very low risk: "Keep adjusting the mold until what comes out exactly matches this prototype."
Certification will indeed present many hurdles, and if that effort is to be funded from the KS campaign alone, then it seems very underfunded to me. I very much doubt anything much less than $1M (about 5K backers) will give them enough resources to ensure timely shipment of all products.
So, I'm interested and hopeful, but because I'm also skeptical, I'm going to hold off for at least 2 more weeks. As I write this, Kicktrak predicts NODEZ won't reach $300K.
Fortunately, there is barely enough time for some big surges to hit and change the curve. The NODEZ folks need to get busy with cross-campaign marketing and, if possible, getting their prototypes out for hands-on reviews. They need buzz, and lots of it.
I'll probably pledge when they reach $700K. But only if they release an API I can use to make NODEZ work with Home Assistant and other open-source HA systems.
And, also, after I finally, utterly and totally give up on WW.
What would make me most happy would be for NODEZ to release their API and then for WW to immediately announce support for it. That would let me get only the NODEZ pieces I need, and, with them working alongside the Relay and Sensor block, I need not worry about integration with anything else.
And WW could have the rest of the year to deliver my Relay and Sensor block.
